Chosen Not Forsaken
My work is an expression of how I perceive human nature. Through the process of
creating a work with incorporation of paint textures, characteristics are formed from the expressive marks that make up the abstract paintings . My work uses the paint and canvas as ways to show transparency, vulnerability and brokenness. The canvas and stretcher bars are both a surface that are manipulated together in the piece.
The pieces are created individually but are grouped together with their own unique marks and repetitive marks that give viewers the chance to make connections to how each works with another. This grouping lets many styles and ideas become expressed into one series.
Some ideas within the works are reflective of feelings that we feel. The fragility of the threads echo the vulnerability that we have in ourselves. There is also a raw quality in the exposed canvas.. These pieces encourage viewers to feel each material cutting, pulling, and twisting within. Yet, they have beauty in the form and details. The breaks and cuts that physically show the struggle while the bright colors bring vibrancy and more positive energy.
The Chosen Not Forsaken series references where we all come from as God’s children. We are all chosen without being perfect or strong yet we are seen in those ways regardless of what we look like or feel. The struggles, tears and breaks are not what defines us but rather our identity of who God sees us as and together we are mysterious and broken but bold and confident.
